Capstone and Food System in Action

Capstone projects provide experiential learning for students as they apply a food systems approach to a current issue. The process of creating an individual capstone project encourages students to effectively synthesize program concepts into daily experience. Members also complete cohort-led group project to solidify their leadership development as they collaborate to address a grand challenge affecting the food system in their Food Systems in Action Project.

The Food System in Action project for the IFSL 2020 cohort was to apply their lFSL experience to propose solutions for the real-time challenges the COVID-19 pandemic is placed on our global food system. An Anti-Racism Playbook for Food Businesses

Sook Jin Ong developed this playbook during 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic and racial reckoning was taking place in the United States. She leveraged her passion for food, IFSL learnings, and public policy experience to create a resource of options for food business leaders to consider as they navigate the longer-term impacts.

Dialed Up

Elleni Paulson developed Dialed Up, a website and podcast series that “take the biggest problems facing rural America, dial the volume up, and explore what’s being done to fix them.” Elleni recognized during her IFSL journey that the mindset and policies originating in our urban centers may not have the positive impact intended in rural America. In her series, she dives into issues at the forefront of this divide, starting with the inadequacy of rural internet, to promote a more collaborative approach for the food system.

Diversification of Supply Base

Amanda Pollander developed her capstone in a manner that merged her career with her IFSL experience. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic was disrupting trade globally and this meant that supply chains in every industry were at risk of disruption. Amanda’s capstone provides critical information about why and how to minimize the effects of supply chain disruption through Diversification of Supply Base.
