Developing a Global Food System Perspective

Janice Spotlight

As a food safety certification manager for a non-profit organization in Taiwan, Janice is passionate about her role in creating a system that supports better, safer food for the world. She is also an enthusiastic lifelong learner. Janice received her bachelor’s degree in food science from the National Pingtung University of Science and Technology and continued her education in Australia, where she earned a master’s degree in health policy at the University of Sydney. She is participating in the IFSL program to increase her leadership skills and develop a more comprehensive understanding of the entire food system.

Through her experiences in the IFSL program, Janice gained a clearer understanding of how each component and complexity of the food system is interconnected. Her exposure to different views and perspectives from other countries has enabled her to generate new ideas more quickly.

What prompted you to apply to the IFSL program?

We don’t have a program that covers the whole food system in Taiwan. The IFSL program combines all topics –from farm to fork – together into one program and that perspective is invaluable when you are developing your skills in this industry. In addition, the leadership components of the program were very appealing to me.

As a new manager, I wanted to build the leadership mindset needed to address food system challenges most effectively.

Is there a project you worked on that caused you to expand your thinking?

Yes. I’ve learned so much about global trends in the food industry – things like environmental protections, clear labeling, reducing emissions, sustainability, and climate. People care more about the impact of these topics than ever before. I want to promote this type of thinking in Taiwan and influence the creation of new products, so they comply with environmental certifications.

What has been your most impactful experience in the program?

I was so excited to find this program; the fact that its online is so beneficial for me. With COVID restrictions, I’m not able to travel to the U.S., but the online delivery of the material has been perfect for me. I bring a distinct perspective to the discussions because I have a different background than most of the other students. Despite that, we all have a shared experience along this journey. We respect one another and value what we learn from each other.

What have you gained as a participant in the program?

As a program participant, I’ve been able to build upon my international perspective. I have far greater exposure to global challenges and solutions than I did before.
